Instructional Materials and Activities

A critical aspect of the effective implementation of online instruction is the instructional material and activities that facilitate learning (Govindasamy, No Date).   However, the development of these resources is determined by the educational outcomes (Blicblau, 2006).  Once the objectives and strategies are for delivery are identified there is a range of open source and freeware application available to develop these resources.  One such application is exeLearning, an open source free application to develop a series of interactive learning activities and materials which are delivered via WebLearn (WebLearn, 2011).  The purpose is to support educators to design, create and publish web-based teaching and learning materials in different formats.  Incorporating a variety of learning resources not only stimulate learning but appeal to the learner's interest (Broderick, 1956).

Advantages of eXeLearning

The benefits of exe are
  1.   A collection of tools to create sequences of online learning activities
  2.  Activities can be arranged in any order with sequenced branch
  3.   Information can be copy and pasted from a word document
  4.  Can be easily linked to an external website
  5.  Assessment can be created using MCQs and various question types
  6.   A collection of appearance styles available.

(WebLearn, 2011)

eXeLearning is ideal for my project as it allows me to create a wide variety of activities that meet the needs of my learners.  Interactive materials such as
  • Videos – for visual and audio transfer of information
  • Activities – for students to interactive with and build knowledge
  • Website – inclusion of various sources of information
  • Assessment – for learners to demonstrate their understanding

These resources can be exported as SCORM packages that can be upload to an LMS system for delivery.
